The class at the Massage Therapy Canada Expo, packed with massage therapists, is transfixed by the image on the screen. The picture is of a young woman in postural analysis. She jumped out of a plane and when her parachute didn’t fully open she was hurt terribly. Her pelvis was crushed. Surgeons placed rods along her spine to try to straighten it with mixed success. In the sideview, she looks like a squashed “s.” The assembled therapists let out an involuntary and uncomfortable “Ooh!” Fortunately, this is the before picture.

The thin red-headed man at the front of the room clicks a button and up pops the after picture. The assembled let out an appreciative “Aah!” The woman’s posture is corrected; the squashed “s” is now a tall “I.” Within a year of her accident, the client totally recovered and even began running marathons.

BarryJenings_7A massage therapist for 20 years who has trained 4,000 students internationally, Barry Jenings changed the young woman’s postural and alphabetic profile with Myofascial Release (MFR.) At 43, Jenings is still learning as much as he can so he can teach as much as he can so he can help as many people as he can. He’s fascinated with how fascia affects the function, pathology and health of the human form. He works without lubricant with varied techniques to release constricted fascia to realign postural distortions and erase pain. Jenings even makes a connection between posture and mood. “Put the body in a good mechanical position…then things change and it really empowers the client. They’re straighter, but they’re happier, too.”
